Why I Love Film for Weddings

Wedding Tips

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for film. The deep colors, grittiness of the grain and intentional moments are all part of the magic that makes it so special. These types of photos are especially something I love for weddings and while digital now what is used in full force, there is something timeless and dreamy about capturing your moments on film. It is something I offer all of my clients and these are my reasons why.

  1. Slower, More Intentional Process: Film photography requires a more deliberate and intentional approach, as each shot is precious and there’s no “undo” button. During your wedding, I spend time thinking about which moments will be best captured on film and only pull out the film camera when I think the time is right.
  2. Timeless feel: Film photography offers a distinct look and feel that digital photography struggles to replicate, with its characteristic grain, color rendition, and dynamic range. This creates a nostalgic and vintage feel that makes you feel all types of emotion. Think about how you feel when you look at your grandparents wedding albums – that’s exactly what I’m going for.
  3. Storytelling: The subtle imperfections in film can tell a story and capture the raw, unfiltered emotions of your day. Having a collection of film photos adds to the narrative of the wedding and helps you remember the special moments how they happened with more minimal editing.
  4. Soft aesthetic: The grain and color rendering of film creates a soft, romantic, and dreamy aesthetic that enhances the mood of wedding photos. Digital is great, but it can also be really nice to have those softer edged photos where the imperfections don’t need to be retouched out.
  5. Rich colors and textures: Film cameras and film stocks have a natural way of handling light and color that can create images with a depth and quality that digital cameras can’t match. The way film captures light and color, along with the grain, adds a unique texture and vibrancy to the images, making photos appear more vivid and lively which is exactly how I want to capture your day.

If film is something that you want for you wedding, always be sure to check with your photographer ahead of time that they offer it. Film cameras add an extra special touch to your day and will leave you with timeless photos that you’ll be able to look back on for the rest of your life.
